Every ten years the United States Census Bureau mails a survey to count the number of people living in the United States. The U.S. Census is required by the Constitution to count every person living in the U.S. Every ten years. Counting every person may be sometime tricky because of the myths that exist about the Census. Some people do not feel safe giving out their personal information out to strangers.

The U.S. Census offers many benefits to the nation, the Census is providing jobs for residents and the nation is getting a more accurate number of people who live in the United States. The 2010 Census will help to communities receive $400 million in federal funding each year to disperse in activities like hospitals, schools, and senior centers. Cities may be able to acquire this money if the people do not send back their survey. “ Many people think that your information will be shared with someone else” said Miami Beach Senior High student, Sarah Moreno.

The information will not be shared with anyone who does not work in the Census office. In addition many residents are worried that by answering their survey their legal situation in the country will arise. The Census does not require for the surveyor to write down their immigration status in the survey.

I am an incoming senior with fresh ideas on my mind. I can input great ideas for fundraising and ideas to make the student body more active. During the month of February we can sell the soda called “Crush” and advertise it by naming it “Crush on a Crush”. In addition, next year I will be more experience with my classes and have achieved the perfect balance between school and extracurricular activities. I will be able to give my time and dedication to SGA. SGA will help me grow intellectually and discover more about myself.

As we mature, we become more aware of other people’s problems. We start to look around and notice the problems in society. As a young person growing up in a metropolitan area, I have come to realize the needs of other international communities. Also, I have seen the needs of other neighboring communities, who are in far worst economic conditions and have fewer resources. Because, I believe people should be able to live sanitation friendly lives, we should be able to give a hand to troubled communities. Lending a hand in a place like Haiti where there is virtually no sanitation at the moment is a great cause to support. The Sustained Organic Integrated Livelihoods, SOIL, a non-profit organization helps communities in Haiti live better lives.

SOIL operates in Haiti helping communities improve sanitation conditions. SOIL works to protect the soil resources and transforming Haiti’s waste into resources. In addition, SOIL solves issues like poverty and poor health conditions. Sanitation conditions have worsened since the earthquake hit in January. According to oxfam.com, this year only 5% of latrines have been installed and 18,000 are needed to support 900,000 people in Port au Prince.

SOIL has brought ecological toilets to the Haitian community. Ecological toilets work by taking feces and urine and turning it into valuable fertilizer. This can then be fertilized to grow food that will provide for an entire family. Also, ecological toilets reduce the amount of standing water, therefore lowering the risk of obtaining a water-borne disease like diarrhea, cholera, and E.coli. The ecological toilets provide a sanitation environment and allow farmers to work with the soil.

Organizations like SOIL, not only need good intentions to improve the poverty, create work in Haiti and work with the ecological toilets, but also economical sustainability. SOIL needs people to take a stand and perform. Any little bit of money counts, do not let Haitians live in unsanitary conditions, help SOIL change lives. The people of Haiti should able to perform their daily activities without worrying about waste in their cities. The Dartmouth Bound Program is a one in a life time opportunity. In fact, it is one of the very seldom opportunities I will have to visit a college campus. My family does not have the monetary funds to supply me with college campus visits throughout the duration of my junior year, and regardless of how I would like to visit campuses, I understand that I am limited to virtual visits on the Internet thus far. The program will help me learn more about Dartmouth and the setting around it- I will be able to understand not just about Dartmouth, but about its highly intellectual environment. The Dartmouth Bound Program will be a valuable aid to my college planning process. Because neither of my parents have attended college, I am new to the college experience. As the first generation in my family to graduate from high school and go to college, I know that I need to prepare myself very much to be able to compete not just with my already prominent academics and extra-curricular activities, but with the ability to consider that I comprehend how college life will be.

The program will guide me to what I can expect for the college application process to be as well, by allowing me to go past my horizons and be more than just Alice Lavado. Dartmouth Bound will let me discover who Alice Lavado is, and allow me to dig deep into myself to better understand this hardworking student that I am, and that will be a beneficial addition to the program and I will make every minute of this experience count. In addition, my visit to Dartmouth will not only help me out but students in my school too, for I will spread the word about the program and about everything that I learned, from financial aid concepts to college lifestyles.

If I were to be chosen to the Dartmouth Bound Program I will pass on the information I gather to the junior and senior classes in my school.  Some students in Miami Beach Senior High School will be the first one to attend college as well, and they have no ideas about the application process. With the information I gather I could pass on what I have learned to students who may also be limited like I was before the program

On the week of October 29^th, my birthday, my mom was organizing my birthday dinner. She was sick the entire day. We thought there was something wrong with her vesicular, because she was throwing up and feeling pains all day. My stepfather, who loves to bother me, kept insinuating that my mother was pregnant- he said this the whole week- even singing it. One day, I got very tired and frustrated with the entire situation. So, this day, I got upset, and decided I would prove them wrong. We went to the local pharmacy to buy a pregnancy test. The entire family went, almost as a show of solidarity and strength for my mother. Even though she might have been wrong, we were all there to support her, because my mother has lost a child not very long ago, and I personally thought that she might have felt sad and disappointed if she wasn’t pregnant. Then we headed back home, where she took the test. This whole time was a moment of suspense. My mother on her bed, my stepdad on the computer researching something, my sister looking at herself on the mirror, and me sitting on a couch- all of us waiting. After a minute, my mother checks the test- there are two faint pink lines. The box said that the lines would be a very bright pink, so my mother, in frustration, said that she would go to the doctor on Monday, to settle everything. The following Monday, when I was in school, the thoughts were still going through my mind-, keeping me distraught, even through Pre-Calculus. I had to go to the City Hall for an internship afterschool, so I had to wait for an extra two hours.

My mother was pregnant- had been pregnant for a whole month. The following week, I saw the first sonogram photograph of the baby. I felt surprised, even knowing how the process worked, that such a creature was growing inside of my mother. Also I was excited, because with this baby, I felt that I could be more involved with my sibling now. My sister is only a year younger than me, so I couldn’t go through the entire experience of holding her, or teaching her about my experiences, since we usually went through the same things at the same time. The feeling wasn’t the same with cousins either- this is my brother.

Now, we’ve been very careful, almost worried, about my mother. She might have to get a cesarean section to give life to him, but she doesn’t feel too comfortable with that. Not very long ago, my stepdad got the crib for the baby, and he’s been promising to do everything different this time. He says he has spoiled his other children too much, and hasn’t spent enough time with them, so he’s promised to everyone in my family that things will be better now. He even got one of those strollers that people use while jogging.

 It was so shocking, almost, to have another pregnancy in the family, because a pregnancy does not change just the mother’s life, or the father’s. It changes everything, for everyone involved.
